Troglodytes

This cartoon relates to Chamberlain's comment (quoted below the cartoon) in his speech at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 20 October 1903. Chamberlain is on the left, in an explorer's outfit, and wearing his trademark monocle. To his left, squatting on a rock and isolated from the rest of the group, is Lord Rosebery. The group in the foreground, squatting around the fire, consists of prominent members of the Unionist Free Food League—clockwise from the left, the Duke of Devonshire, C T Ritchie, Lord George Hamilton and Sir Michael Hicks Beach. Behind them are the Liberals: from left to right, David Lloyd-George, H H Asquith and Henry Campbell-Bannerman, with --- standing behind.
