The Onlooker

According to the Times of 16 October 1900, The Onlooker was first published on that date, and the editor was Mrs. Harcourt Williamson.

It goes on to say:
The Onlooker, which appears to-day, is the latest addition to the ranks of the social weeklies. Its price is 3d., and we are told that its circulation is assured since the list of subscribers numbers “all the best-known names in English and American society, including Royalty.” After this announcement, which sufficiently indicates the character of the Onlooker, no words are needed to recommend it. We will only mention that the first number includes a capital pencil-drawing of Mr Winston Churchill MP, from the skilful hand of Mr Mortimer Menpes.

On 15 September 1911, The Times carried a report of a meeting of creditors in the liquidation of the Social Bureau (Limited) under a winding-up order made on 14 June, which says among other things: “. . . . The company had traded at a loss since 1905, and in May, 1909, a receiver for debenture-holders was appointed. The directors attributed the company’s failure to the illness of Mrs F Harcourt Williamson, the managing director, the business being mainly a personal one.”
