New in November 2014: We present the full-length serialization of the first of Wodehouse’s transatlantic-romance novels. A much shorter and very different form of the tale was originally published as The Gem Collector in the American magazine Ainslee’s. The full-length novel as printed in the USA under the title The Intrusion of Jimmy has long been available online, though nearly always in somewhat unreliable transcriptions. Slightly revised and expanded for the British market, it first appeared in this Tit-Bits serialization with a pluralized title, then in very similar form appeared in hardback as A Gentleman of Leisure in November 1910, published by Alston Rivers. Later British releases under that title by Wodehouse’s regular publishers were very slightly abridged.

Tit-Bits, UK

Tit-Bits from all the interesting Books, Periodicals, and Newspapers of the World, to give its full title, was a penny weekly magazine founded by George Newnes (best known for publishing The Strand Magazine) in 1881. It began, as its title implies, as a digest of entertaining extracts from a wide variety of publications. Original short stories and novel-length fiction were soon added to the mix, featuring authors from H. Rider Haggard to Isaac Asimov.

In the middle twentieth century it began to take on a slightly salacious reputation, and was one of the first publications to feature lightly-clad young women on the front cover. It lost the hyphen in its title in 1973 and ceased publication in 1984.
